research in the fields of general linguistics, African linguistics, Fulfulde, Hausa, Bantu languages, Omotic languages, Chinese, Cree, Saami languages, Romani languages, and Dardic languages. He has carried out linguistic fieldwork in Cameroon, Mali, Ethiopia, and Zambia.
