New Amigos’ view is that an educational game can be as fun as a game that exists purely for entertainment while at the same time being as effective as any teaching tool. When the class plays, the motivation for learning foreign languages for all students is strengthened. The students acquire language skills while playing at 3 individual levels. Playing enhances students’ motivation for language learning and improves their grades!
The Goethe Institute in Russia created a school competition focused on the board game, which has been running since 2007 across Russia. The German-Russian Forum organises the same school competition with the board game in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. To date, 70,000 students have participated in the competition.
The main objective of the game is to enhance motivation and self-esteem in a fun and social learning environment. The focus is on function rather than perfection and the game aims to to stimulate the use of the spoken language from the very start. New Amigos takes its players from zero kowledge of a language to fluent conversation in a structured way that is easy to monitor. The app can be played as a part of a daily routine between two people, which creates “epic meaning” as players are not only responsible for their own learning, but also for that of others.
